Average pace and speed
Pace describes how long it takes to cover one kilometre. Speed describes how many kilometres you cover in one hour. They are equivalent ways of expressing the same average performance.
Pace = total time ÷ distance
Speed = distance ÷ time
Speed = distance ÷ time
What is it useful for?
It helps turn a race or training session into easy-to-compare references. The 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon times only show how long those distances would take at exactly the same pace.
